I ask this question following discussion with my 12 year old daughter this morning.
You see she came to me with a question of her own: “What do you think the world will be like?” A little confused and a little taken aback I asked what she meant to be sure I answered here question. She replied coyly, “when I grow up and become an adult.”
My initial response: “scary, busy with respossibilities and choices”. She then observed how some grown upso seem to walk around aimlessly like they are heading nowhere. A learning opportunity was here so I pounced.
“This is why it is so important to know yourself: your values and what matters most to you, the things you stand for and won’t do without.” She tells me her friends have been saying she should become a comedian and how much she love to make others laugh and why. “That’s great. Remember though that everyone has to choose for themselves. If you don’t know who you are then society, friends and family will influence you by dictating what “success” is and what it looks like.”
The truth is we all have to live our own success so we might as well be the ones defining it.
I’ll love to hear how you define success. Leave your comments below.
